Spring Into Gardening: What to Do This Week April 7-11th in the Garden

Garden To-Do List – Week of April 10 .Spring is in full swing, and there’s plenty to do in the garden this week! Whether you’re growing veggies, herbs, flowers, or just tidying up the yard, this list will keep you on track and help your garden thrive.

🌼 Flowers & Ornamentals Plant annuals and perennials like marigolds, petunias, snapdragons, and coneflowers. Deadhead spent blooms on early spring flowers to encourage more blooms. Fertilize established perennials and spring bulbs. Divide overcrowded perennials such as hostas and daylilies. Mulch flower beds to retain moisture and prevent weeds.

🥕 Vegetable Garden Direct sow cool-weather crops: lettuce, spinach, kale, carrots, beets, radishes, and peas. Transplant hardy seedlings like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. Start heat-loving veggies indoors if you haven’t yet: tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. Add compost or a slow-release organic fertilizer to enrich your soil. Weed your garden beds and walkways to keep everything tidy and healthy.

🌿 Herb Garden Plant early-season herbs like parsley, cilantro, chives, and dill. Divide and replant perennial herbs such as oregano, mint, and thyme if they’re leggy or spreading. Pinch back indoor herbs to encourage fuller, bushier growth.

🌳 Trees, Shrubs & Lawns Prune spring-blooming shrubs after they finish flowering. Inspect for pests and disease on trees and bushes. Mulch around trees to conserve water and protect roots (but keep it away from the trunk). Fertilize your lawn if you haven’t done so yet this season. Dethatch or aerate compacted lawns if needed.

🌸 General Garden Tasks Sharpen your garden tools and clean your blades. Check irrigation systems and hoses for leaks or clogs. Set up rain barrels or water catchment if you use them. Plant pollinator-friendly flowers like lavender, bee balm, and native wildflowers. Keep a garden journal – track what’s growing, blooming, or needing attention.
